A north-east woman has completed a massive swim at her local pool to help raise money for two good causes.

Sammi Gray swam the whole day away at Turriff’s swimming pool last week – from 7am to 9pm – to raise about £3,000 for Insch Community Hospital and Maggie’s Centres.

The 22-year-old last night said she completed the task to give something back to the people who helped her grandmother, Aileen Willox, who died following a cancer diagnosis.

Ms Gray, who works at the swimming pool, said: “I thought I’d do my part to raise money, and I don’t really like running so I just thought I’d swim – it’s the only thing I enjoy doing.

“But it was definitely a struggle to swim for that length of time, but we got there, Maybe I’ll pick something a bit easier on the body next time.

“My granny went into Maggie’s for a bit of relaxation for a couple of days and came out a completely different person – it was just amazing.

“It really helps people out during difficult times.”

It is thought Ms Gray clocked up 18miles during her 14-hour swim, completing 1,500 lengths of the swimming pool.

The money raised will be split equally between the hospital and the care centres.

Maggie’s Centres, which care for families and people affected by a cancer diagnosis, offers free advice and support in 15 locations throughout the UK.

Eight more centres are in development, and the charity hopes to soon open one in Barcelona.
