North-east schools dazzle at Rock Challenge

Two north-east schools wowed audiences over the weekend at the finals of a music and dance competition.

Fraserburgh Academy and Mintlaw Academy both travelled to Dundee on Saturday where event organisers said they “blew away” judges of this year’s UK Rock Challenge.

Competing against schools from across the country, Mintlaw finished fifth with Fraserburgh placing second.

A spokeswoman for the event, however, said both sets of youngsters had produced a spectacle worthy of winning.#

The UK Rock Challenge invites schools to create a stage performance set to commercially available songs.

This year, Fraserburgh entered with a piece about the horrors of animal testing, while Mintlaw produced a story on the tail of Medusa.

“They competed against 11 other teams on the day,” a spokeswoman for the Rock Challenge said.

“Each school has to come up with their own five to eight minute performance, including drama or dance. They can do it on anything they want, but bring it here and perform it.”

The schools performed at Caird Hall, to a sold-out audience.

The spokeswoman added that there was “obvious excitement” in the air.

“The six judges we had were just blown away by the standards on the night,” she said.

“It was such a strong line-up, and took them a long time to judge. But that is simply down to each school being good in their own right. It was so close.

“But only positive things came of it, and it was really good to see all the schools coming together for it.”

Youngsters are now looking towards July 2, when the Rock Challenge scheme continues in Grimsby for the Northern Premier Final.

Peterhead Academy will face off against school teams from Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Cumbria, Nottinghamshire and Angus at the event.

The school automatically qualified for the Northern Premier Final after winning the event last year.
