Fraserburgh’s Christmas celebrations could be stepped up this year

Fraserburgh's Christmas celebrations could be bigger and better than before.
Fraserburgh's Christmas celebrations could be bigger and better than before.

A new community organisation has been created to improve the quality of a north-east town’s Christmas celebrations.

The Rotary Club of Fraserburgh had to step in at the eleventh hour last Christmas to salvage the port’s festive holiday.

It pulled together a number of local businesses, who were able to organise stalls, but there was no Christmas tree or fireworks celebration.

The group behind the town’s previous late-night shopping experience – local businesses who collaborated to make the event happen – had disbanded.

But the Rotary volunteers have now set up Festive Frozen Fraserburgh, which is committed to staging a bumper event this December.

It has been formed in partnership with the town’s Super Saturday committee, lifeboat, development trust, college and Police Scotland Youth Volunteers scheme.

At its inaugural meeting last month, it was agreed fundraising would commence this summer with a massive public barbecue.

Throughout the year, a ceilidh and talent show will also take place to boost Christmas funds.

Ann Bell, president elect of Fraserburgh Rotary, insisted she was “looking forward” to guaranteeing this year’s Yuletide celebrations were the best ever held in the town.

Leona Findlay, coordinator of the Super Saturday events, added: “Our last event of 2016 was a great success.

“It was held the week after the town’s late night shopping, but this year, we have decided to join forces with the Rotary and local business owners in order to join the two events and deliver a bigger and better weekend-long event at the end of the year.

“It will showcase what the Broch has to offer and [highlight the fact] we don’t have to travel far and spend a fortune on a family day out.

“We want to organise a family event that will leave visitors and locals feeling positive about the town and return to do their shopping, meet for lunch or attend more community events.”

The next meeting of the Christmas committee will be held on February 23 at Symposium Coffee House in the High Street.

Anyone interested in helping is asked to attend at 1pm.
