Registration for a massive fundraising event closed last night as hundreds of women prepare to don pink and walk the streets of the north-east.

Fraserburgh’s Moonlight Prowl has raised thousands for cancer research and treatment since it was launched 11 years ago, but took a hiatus last year.

But earlier this year, organisers announced it would return on June 3 and encouraged locals to get involved and sign up.

The event is being held in an effort to boost the coffers of the Baird Family Hospital and the Anchor Centre project – a £150million facility at Aberdeen’s Foresterhill Health Campus.

Due to open in 2020, the project is creating two new buildings to improve the provision of clinical care in the north-east.

Since the Moonlight Prowl came into being, more than £750,000 has been raised for projects it supports.

Registration closed yesterday.

A spokeswoman for the event said numbers for the event had been rising throughout the registration period.

She added: “Remember, the Prowl is not a race.

“It’s open to all ages and abilities.”

Committee member Jacqueline Watt added that the event could be the “first step” to a more active and healthy lifestyle for those taking part.

“We’re very excited to relaunch the prowl and look forward to supporting the delivery of these two very important facilities,” she said.

“Both buildings will include state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities and will offer person-centred environment of care.

“The new hospital will provide accommodation for breast screening, breast surgery and gynaecology services and the Anchor Centre will include care for patients with cancer and patients with blood and bone marrow disorders.”

This year’s Moonlight Prowl will have two routes for participants to take part in – a family-friendly, three-mile course or a more challenging six-mile route for the more experienced.
