Members take action after lifebelts and kids’ play area damaged

A masterplan could be launched to bring an end to “shameful” vandalism on a beach next year.

Fraserburgh beach has been targeted by vandals who smash up children’s toys and the attraction’s facilities during the summer for many years.

Now councillors from the port have rallied together to try and find a way forward for the sands that will put an end to the attacks.

Last night, councillor Brian Topping said he and colleagues hoped to have the plan drawn up in the new year.

He said: “It’s good for the town that all of the local councillors are putting politics to one side to work on improving the area.

“Over the last year I have been trying to get replacement equipment in the area.

“Vandals have been putting sand everywhere and three seats have gone missing from around the pool. We’ve had to clear up all the paths and new seats have been installed over the last two weeks.”

The move to curb vandalism at the beach comes just weeks after a cleaning party found shards of glass bottles embedded at the foot of dunes.

Two sand diggers for children were also damaged.

Aberdeenshire Council aims to replace them.

“I’m very sad at the vandalism in the area,” Mr Topping added.

“Vandals have smashed the lights and lifebelts have been stolen, ripped and broken.

“It’s very disappointing, people don’t seem to have consideration for others and they should be ashamed of themselves.

“I’m delighted that the council have moved in swiftly to deal with this, but if this continues there will come a point where it won’t be replaced.”

New play equipment for the beach, which draws thousands of tourists to the area each year, is expected to be installed in January.
