Annual festival celebrating north-east’s emergency services makes its return

A celebration of the north-east’s emergency services will be staged this weekend.

Fraserburgh’s Blue Light Festival regularly brings thousands of people to the port and on Sunday, organisers are hoping to show visitors the life-saving work the port’s lifeboat, police and fire teams do every day.

Activities include stalls for each of the 999 services, including the local community first responders, and live demonstrations.

This year, it is being hosted at the Fraserburgh Leisure Centre.

Last year, about 2,000 people attended the event and organiser Doug Ewen said he is hoping for the same kind of crowd.

Mr Ewen said: “A parade will start things off, with all the emergency vehicles doing a lap of the leisure centre.

“We’ve got quite a variety taking part this year, as well as the usual vehicles from the police, fire and ambulance services.

“And throughout the day we’ll be running various live scenarios, with a major road accident demonstration involving all the groups at about 3pm.”

The event, which is free to attend, opens its doors at 12.30pm, when the local pipe band will begin playing the vehicles into the arena.

It closes at 4.30pm.

Mr Ewen promised there would be something for everyone to see, and said proceeds from the event would – as is the case every year – go to good causes.

“We have plenty of stalls lined up, with local groups and charities all taking part,” he said.

“The local RNLI will also be running a barbecue.

“All of the excess money raised by the Blue Light Fesitval will be given to local groups and charities later in the year.

“We’ll organise meetings with them and decide where the money will go.”
