Retailers in a north-east town hope their colourful royal wedding displays will be a boost for businesses in the area.

Shop windows in Fraserburgh town centre have been decked out in union flags and images of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ahead of their nuptials on Saturday.

About 30 firms have kitted out their shops in blue, red and white colours and feature cardboard cutouts of the couple, who will marry at St George’s Chapel on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

One cheeky message posted on the window of Homestyle on Cross Street even states: “If only the royal couple had known that we do a wedding gift list service.”

The man behind the Brighten Up the Broch campaign is furniture store manager Brian Bruce.

He said it was important for businesses in Fraserburgh to unite and add a splash of colour to the town.

Mr Bruce said: “We want to brighten up the Broch so people recognise Fraserburgh for good things.

“It is all just a bit of fun and is not meant to offend anybody.

“I want visitors to come into the town centre and spend money.

“It is important that we let people know Fraserburgh is open for business.”

Melissa McLean from Blush Bridal wedding shop said their display was attracting a lot of attention.

She said: “A lot of people are coming past the shop and asking about the display.

“The union flags and the dresses really brighten up the shop.”

And Jim Wilson, who runs S & J’s party store, said they have been kept busy with locals stocking up on bunting and other royal wedding related items ahead of the big day.

He said: “I think it is fine to see the town come together with events like this.

“There is a wee bit of a divide in the town regarding the royal family, but overall I think people are well up for it and they are excited.

“We are ordering more and more stock in, but it is good to see that the customers are happy.”
