Pictures show conditions north-east motorists faced this morning after heavy rain hit

jw=RBUJGkicA yellow weather warning for heavy rain has been issued for the north-east.

The Met Office said further heavy rain is expected across parts of Moray and Aberdeenshire in the next few hours and urged motorists and residents to stay “weather aware”.

UPDATE:

Bridge inspections taking place after day of flooding chaos in the north-east

The yellow alert reads: “Further rain, heavy at times, is expected this morning, easing into the afternoon. The heaviest rain is likely to be near the coast, with a further 20-30 mm of rain possible. This is in addition to the 15-30 mm that has already fallen along the north Aberdeenshire coast, notably the Fraserburgh area overnight.”

It is understood sections of the road between Fraserburgh and Peterhead had to be closed this morning. There were also issues on stretches near St Fergus and between Crimond and Lonmay.

Bus services in the Fraserburgh area were suspended for a time due to the weather conditions. Stagecoach are updating customers via its twitter account.

Its latest update said: “Due to the flooding and vehicles stuck in water the 273 service # Fraserburgh to #Gardenstown will be diverting using the A98 for the rest of the day. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Traffic Scotland meanwhile is reporting the A90 is closed at Lonmay  in both directions due to flooding.

And the road between Banff and Gamrie is badly affected by surface water.

HM Coastguard – Moray has urged motorists to avoid driving through any affected roads.

A statement on their Facebook page reads: “Various roads across the area are flooded today due to the torrential rainfall currently being experienced.

“If you come across a flooded road, please do not attempt to go through it, you wont be able to see the surface and may become stranded with a flooded vehicle or potentially swept away.

It only takes a small amount of moving water to move even a heavy 4×4 style vehicle.

“If you get into difficulties or see anyone get into difficulties, don’t hesitate to call the emergency services.”

The heavy rain has also caused the Fraserburgh FC and Huntly FC match to be postponed due to a flooded pitch.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (Sepa) has also issued flood alerts for Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen, Findhorn, Nairn, Moray and Speyside.

The warning reads: “Heavy and persistent rain across this area overnight and into Saturday morning may cause some surface water flooding and flooding from small watercourses.

“Minor impacts are possible if the most intense rain falls on built up areas prone to flooding, or on roads. Flooding affecting individual properties and minor disruption to transport, including difficult driving conditions is possible. The heaviest rainfall is expected this morning.”
