Super Saturdays return to Fraserburgh

A series of family-friendly events aimed at reinvigorating a north-east town centre was relaunched at the weekend.

Super Saturdays returned to Fraserburgh after a successful pilot run last year.

Hundreds flocked to the port’s Saltoun Square for the first of six themed fun days planned for 2014.

The aim is to lure more shoppers and visitors into the beleaguered town centre area as part of a wider

regeneration project.

On Saturday, a range of stalls and games with a homecoming theme were set up in and around the central square.

The fun kicked off at 10am with a performance by the town’s Royal British Legion Pipe Band. Throughout the day, visitors got the chance to sample local foods, learn about the town’s bygone days and enjoy live music.

First minister Alex Salmond was in attendance, campaigning with Euro candidates Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh and Ian Hughton.

Super Saturdays co-ordinator Anne Gostling said: “We are committed to promoting Fraserburgh and the surrounding area by providing a series of six themed events this year, including live entertainment, market stalls and food and drink.”

The next fun day has been scheduled for June 14 and will have a fishing theme. Other themes planned for the rest of the year will be inspired by sports, farming and food and drink. A special festive event will be held in the run-up to Christmas.

Super Saturdays coincides with a recently revealed action plan for Fraserburgh, which aims to breathe new life into the town centre.

Last week, the proposal was savaged by local councillors for simply stating the obvious and failing to address underlying problems. But project leaders insist that feedback from the public has been positive.

Aberdeenshire Council’s regeneration officer Gillian Bain said Super Saturdays were an important part of helping to revive the town.

“The regeneration action plan for Fraserburgh recognises that regeneration is not just about buildings and the economy, but about communities and an active town centre,” she said.
