Peterhead man given 18 months for robbery and assault

A dad-of-two has been jailed for a string of offences, including attacking a man in Fraserburgh after a drug deal collapsed.

Aaron Rennie appeared from custody at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday for sentencing, after previously admitting the assault.

He also admitted into a house on King Street, Peterhead and stealing a £15 bottle of methadone, and a further charge of resisting arrest.

The offences took place on November 9 and December 23 last year.

Rennie – who was described in a social work report as “intelligent and articulate” – was jailed for 18 months.

Sheriff Andrew Miller told the repeat offender: “At the age of 28, a heavy duty of responsibility rests on you.

“Over the years, you have been sentenced to periods of custody and have also had the benefit of other disposals. The various community disposals made available to you don’t appear to have had the desired effect. It seems to me that only a custodial sentence is appropriate.”

Defence agent Gail Wiggins said her client was keen to turn his life around.

“He comes across, and always has done, as an articulated person who has done a lot to better himself,” she said.

“He wishes to become a responsible member of society. He wants to be able to put it all behind him and move forward. One matter playing on his mind is that he is due to be an usher at his sister’s wedding in July and that is something that he will have to live with.”

The court heard that Rennie had broken into the Peterhead home after failing to receive payment for an iPad he had sold, and struggling with police when caught fleeing the scene.

A month later, he assaulted a man in Fraserburgh a m later after he allegedly handed over £20 to buy valium and was turned away. He grabbed the man by the collar, struck him with his fist and head and pinned him down on a sofa.

The victim did not require medical attention.
