Fraserburgh care worker facing misconduct charge

St Modans Care Home, Fraserburgh.
St Modans Care Home, Fraserburgh.

A north-east care worker faces being banned from the profession after she was accused of lying to her boss about a resident falling out of bed.

Barbara Milne, who worked as a care assistant at St Modans Care Home in Fraserburgh, is accused of “repeatedly failing” to tell her manager that anything had happened to the woman, despite being asked.

She also allegedly failed to activate the emergency buzzer following the incident in December 2014.

Ms Milne was sacked from her post just four days later, and she is further accused of failing to tell the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) that she had been dismissed.

She faces three separate charges, including that she repeatedly failed to provide assistance to colleagues who were moving residents and that she did not wear personal protective equipment whilst looking after the people in her care.

She will face a SSSC hearing next week, in which she could be banned from working within the social services sector if found guilty.

The offences allegedly took place between June 15 and December 22, 2014, while she was employed at the home, which is run by Inverness-based firm, Meallmore Limited.

In the same year, St Modans bosses were ordered by inspectors to make a string of improvements to address “serious” and “significant” concerns.

Residents were found drugged needlessly and left living in filthy conditions at the premises.

Staff even ripped off vulnerable people by making a profit on selling them basic toiletries.

Since then, the home has received praise from the Care Inspectorate about how it is being run.

At the last inspection in December, it received top grades for the support offered, the environment, staffing, and management.

A spokeswoman for Meallmore said Ms Milne was suspended for “failing to follow company policy” on the moving and handling of residents.

“An internal investigation was conducted and following this, the individual was dismissed from her role in December 2014 and was referred to the Scottish Social Services Council,” she added.

“We take matters like this seriously and regularly review staff procedural compliance to ensure the safety, security and comfort of the residents in all our homes across Scotland.”
