A heartbroken mum is still waiting for answers about how her son and his stepfather died – a decade after a fire in a Fraserburgh flat claimed their lives.

Catherine Youngson believes the pair were murdered.

And she says she remained hopeful the mystery surrounding the death of her son Derek “Decky” Youngson, 19, and former partner Derek Roy, 47, would be solved.

The men died on Hogmanay 2006 at about noon when a blaze engulfed a top floor flat in the port’s Kirk Brae.

Last night, Ms Youngson, who still lives in Fraserburgh, admitted that every day since has been a struggle to get through.

“It’s been 10 years since he died, and nothing has been done about it,” she added.

The 49-year-old, who has four other children, said: “I’m still grieving for my son every day.

“I love and miss him so much, and so do my children. We’re all grieving.

“I just want justice. He was so young and so full of life – funny and loving. I definitely believe it was murder.

“I wish I could turn back time, and I’m trying to get on with my life but it is very hard.”

William Youngson, Derek’s older brother, added he just wanted to know why the fire was started.

Mr Youngson, 30, said: “I just really want to know who did it and why?

“I really miss my brother very much. He wasn’t just my brother, he was my best friend. I want to move on.”

Police have described the investigation into the fatal fire in Fraserburgh’s town centre as “open”.
