A hit musical is making its way to the north-east this summer with open auditions taking place tonight.

Youngsters from Fraserburgh will be given the chance to belt out tunes from The Proclaimers to land a role in the production at the town’s Dalrymple Hall.

The musical, which has enjoyed a hugely successful run at Dundee Rep Theatre and had three UK tours, was written by River City creator Stephen Greenhorn.

The touching love story tells the story of two young squaddies as they return from war in Afghanistan and charts their return to civilian life in Edinburgh.

The musical was made into a film of the same name in 2013, starring Peterhead-born Peter Mullan of Bravehart and Harry Potter fame.

The score includes hits I’m Gonna Be, I’m On My Way, and Letters from America by Fife duo Charlie and Craig Reid.

This summer’s production will be directed by Craig Roger, musical direction by Lynne McPherson and licensed by Josef Weinberger.

Tonight’s auditions open at 7.30pm, and the Fraserburgh Junior Arts Society (FJAS) is calling for keen actors aged 12 and older to take part.

Craig Roger, Sunshine on Leith director, said: “This show captures the essence of Scotland and the Proclaimers’ great songs make this a great show to see and to be in.

“We look forward to seeing our talented local people at the auditions.”

The FJAS marks its 63rd anniversary of shows in the north-east this year.

Each year it sells out the Dalrymple Hall with summer and Christmas shows with families travelling across the north-east to attend.
