A man has appeared in court charged with attempted murder and assault after a 56-year-old was discovered seriously injured in a north-east house.

Gary Crossan appeared in private at Peterhead Sheriff Court yesterday before Sheriff Andrew Miller.

Crossan, 30, is facing one charge of assault to severe injury, permanent impairment, danger to life and attempted murder.

He is also facing two assault to injury charges and two further allegations of assault.

The 30-year-old’s address was given simply as the Peterhead area.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody.

Crossan was committed for further examination and is expected to appear in court again next week.

The man who was found badly injured remained in a “critical condition” in hospital last night.

Police believe he was assaulted in the early hours of Thursday but the alarm was not raised until around 4.30pm that day when he was found in the Peter Buchan Drive area of Peterhead.

He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary where it is understood he was put on life support while doctors assessed his condition.

Detectives described him as a slim white male, 6ft 1in, with blue eyes.

Officers said he speaks with “an English accent” and has cropped grey hair.

He was unshaven when he was discovered.

On Friday police officers stood guard outside a property in the quiet cul-de-sac where the man was discovered.

Detective Inspector Stewart Drummond insisted there was no threat to the wider public.

He said: “I’d like to thank the public for their patience while we have carried out our inquiries into this incident.

“This was an isolated incident and I’d like to reassure the community that there was no wider threat to the public.”

The victim was seen in the Peter Buchan Drive area near Peterhead Academy between 11pm on Wednesday and 2am on Thursday.

Before emergency crews arrived on the scene later that day, the man may have been in the streets surrounding Peter Buchan Drive or the Katternburn Court area in the west of the town.

Police have urged anyone with information to contact them on 101.
