Football trophy tour visits Peterhead to showcase community efforts

Football aficionados dream of seeing their club’s trophy cabinet packed with silverware.

And the reverie came true, albeit briefly, for supporters of Peterhead FC yesterday.

As part of the SPFL Trust’s Trusted Trophy Tour, the sporting body visited the Blue Toon’s Balmoor stadium with five of the country’s top prizes put on display to the community.

The campaign, which is visiting grounds across Scotland and from all four SPFL divisions, is aimed at promoting the work clubs do behind the scenes in their local area.

The Ladbrokes Premiership, the Championship, League 1 and League 2 trophies were all on display, as well as the Betfred Cup.

Last night, Peterhead’s general manager Martin Johnston said: “This is really to shine a spotlight on the work the SPFL do across the country with a number of clubs.

“We’re announcing an initiative with Peterhead Boys Club – we want to work closer with them.

“Come the start of the new campaign, there will be a season ticket for members of the boys club – we want to see them at Balmoor when they’re not playing themselves.”

Mr Johnston added: “The club are heavily involved in the community, and we’re maybe guilty of not telling people.”

Nicky Reid, general manager of the SPFL Trust, is confident the initiative is helping clubs tell the stories of their efforts to improve the lives of supporters and local communities.

She said: “The SPFL Trust felt we can help shine a light on Scottish football as a whole, demonstrating the incredible potential of our clubs and how trusted they are to support those who really need it.”
