Peterhead Rock Challenge pupils gear up for Alcatraz-themed performance

Pupils from Peterhead Academy are making final preparations for their performance at the prestigious Rock Challenge final next month.

The annual project encourages pupils from across the country to choreograph and star in short musicals about making positive life choices.

Youngsters from the Blue Toon’s secondary school will be one of only two Scottish groups taking part at the Northern Premier Final in July.

Peterhead’s show is about prisoners who are trying to escape from the infamous Alcatraz prison in San Francisco Bay – the jail once held mobster Al Capone and was the setting for Sean Connery film The Rock.

Students will focus on the dangerous conditions inmates faced trying to feel the prison, including water and fog.

Biology teacher Lynn Greig said her students are excited about travelling to Grimsby for the competitive final.

“This is my 13th year being involved with Rock Challenge as I also took part when I was a pupil at Peterhead Academy,” she said.

“We have already 80 pupils taking part with over 60 performers in our piece.

“The children have been hard at work and we just had a local holiday and everyone came in and we were able to have a rehearsal for four hours.”

The troupe reached the final after a successful performance at the Aberdeen heats, but has freshened up the show based on judges’ feedback.

More than 2,000 youngsters from across the UK will compete in the final on July 1. The only other Scottish representatives are from Arbroath High School, who return as defending Northern Premier Final champions.
