A north-east councillor has called for a former factory to be turned into a sports centre to bring his town in line with similar offerings in Macduff and Fraserburgh.
Alan Buchan, who represents Peterhead, has called on Aberdeenshire Council to create a multi-million pound leisure facility on the land.
The authority is in the process of tearing down the Terex Powertrain building after it was abandoned seven years ago.
And Mr Buchan believes that it would serve the community best if it were transformed into a modern sports complex.
But last night, he said it was unlikely to happen because “the council don’t want to invest”.
“Macduff has had a new sports centre and Fraserburgh got one opened up a few years ago as well,” he said.
“Really, Peterhead should have something like that for the size that it is – or better.
“But it comes down to money. The council is very reluctant to spend it in Peterhead.
“Something like a sports centre would keep people in the town and be ideal.”
A spokeswoman for Aberdeenshire Council said Mr Buchan was welcome to submit proposals for future projects.
She added: “Every day we spend millions across Aberdeenshire on council services, and Peterhead is as much a part of that as any other settlement.
“Our investment helps us provide education, roads and infrastructure, waste collections, care and access to new opportunities to name but a few essential services.”
While the town does not have a dedicated sports centre, swimming and athletics facilities are available in the port’s Leisure and Community Centre.
It had been hoped that the former Terex factory could be brought back into use, but plans which were unveiled in 2015 to sell the site on have never came to fruition.
