A north-east charity event is aiming to reach its target of raising £2million to combat cancer.
Peterhead’s Relay for Life is in its 12th year and this year organisers have again challenged runners to help in the battle against the disease.
The 24-hour marathon event raises about £200,000 each year, and in July the event is on target to bring its total amount raised to more than £2million.
A spokeswoman for the organising committee said: “We want the statistic of one in two people being affected by cancer in their lifetime to drop.
“If you want to help drop this statistic too, or have been touched by cancer in some way and want to help raise money for Cancer Research UK, then start fundraising for our event on the Cancer Research UK website by entering a team.”
Last year, local woman Samantha Edminson and her team the Funny Farmers took part after her own mum was diagnosed with cancer.
“The Relay for Life Peterhead wasn’t something we knew about before my mum’s illness, but it’s something we’re glad we found out about,” she said.
In addition to the run, which asks sponsored teams to take part in a 24-hour marathon around the town’s track, the Funny Farmers organised a truck pull to help raise cash.
“Loads of people came to give the truck pull a go, and even children were getting involved,” Ms Edminson added.
“Lots of money was raised, and we hope to replicate it again this year.”
This year’s Relay for Life takes place on July 7 and 8.
A meeting to help organise the event will take place on May 10 at the Buchanhaven Hearts Social Club, Peterhead, at 7.30pm. It is open for everyone to attend.
