A new rector has been appointed to take the helm of one of the north-east’s largest secondary schools.

Shona Sellers, 47, will take over at Peterhead Academy on June 2 from her post as deputy head at Inverurie Academy.

The experienced educator and former research scientist has held the post in the Garioch town since August will replace Peterhead’s interim head Evan Ritchie who has been in place since 2011.

Mrs Sellers, who started her teaching career at the nearby Fraserburgh Academy, said she was looking forward to the new challenge.

She said: “I am very much looking forward to working with the team of dedicated staff at the school. And there are many familiar faces there as I’ve taught in the area for a long time.

“I want to provide the best possible quality of educational experience for the young people of Peterhead.

“I recently visited the school and met many pupils. I was very impressed by the young people I spoke to there who were all a credit to Peterhead Academy.

“I am really looking forward to this new challenge.”

Mrs Sellers attended Ellon Academy before studying chemistry at Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University and going on to work as a research scientist at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute.

After 14 years in the laboratory, Mrs Sellers decided to train as a teacher and joined the chemistry department of Fraserburgh Academy.

Chairwoman of the education, learning and leisure committee Isobel Davidson welcomed the news.

She said: “I am sure the school communities in Inverurie and Fraserburgh will join me in passing on congratulations and best wishes to Mrs Sellers on her new appointment as head teacher of Peterhead Academy as she has been a dedicated educator in the north-east for several years.”
