Peterhead craft brewers gear up for national contest

A Peterhead-based craft brewery will be fighting it out in a Ready Steady Cook-style competition next month.

Brew Toon is one of seven Scottish companies taking part in the ReplicAle contest in Edinburgh.

In something reminiscent of the popular Ainsley Harriot television programme, contestants will be given exactly the same ingredients and will be tasked with creating a brand new drink.

Each of the freshly made tipples will be judged in a blind taste test to find the best brew.

Organisers said the event will be a “brilliant display of the versatility of beer and the creativity of Scotland’s craft beer movement.”

The winning brewer will be handed a trophy and the title of ReplicAle Champion 2018.

Brew Toon will be joined by brewers from Dundee, Edinburgh Livingston, Loanhead, and St Andrews.

The event is part of the Edinburgh Craft Beer Experience Festival in the capital in November.

Owner Cameron Bowden said he was thrilled to be pitting his wits against brewers from across Scotland.

He said he will be trying to concoct something a little different when he heads to the capital.

Mr Bowden said: “We are really excited to be part of this year’s Craft Beer Experience, and equally excited to be brewing up an awesome new beer which will take stage alongside six other breweries in the annual ReplicAle contest next month.

“Sticking to our ethos, we are going to be adventurous with this beer and try to create something a bit special that offers a new experience for consumers of our beer.”

Brew Toon was established last year and supplies its craft beer to shops and supermarkets.

The firm’s microbrewery and café is based on Peterhead’s St Peter Street.

The Craft Beer Experience is the first ever festival that Brew Toon have attended.

Thousands of craft beer fans will be visiting the event between at the Assembly Roxy in Edinburgh on Thursday, November 15 and Saturday, November 17.
