A team of individuals fuelled by community spirit are planning to host a Christmas celebration for vulnerable people in Peterhead.

Community Connect Peterhead is appealing to local residents and businesses to donate their time or vouchers to ensure those in need get to enjoy the festive occasion.

A meal held on Christmas Day will be prepared for up to 120 people and it is hoped that each of those who attends will be given a gift.

The aim of Community Connect is that the gifts will be given in a no cash raffle style with numbers taped to the bottom of each seat.

Members of the team are also helping local organisations, such as Modo, to ensure children in the area have access to clothing and can help themselves if they are in need.

One of those leading the project is Sam Peter.

She said: “Myself and my colleagues became aware there was nothing for the most vulnerable people in the town on Christmas.

“Since then we’ve applied for different funding and raised money, teaming up with local organisations such as the Salvation Army and Modo to provide a Christmas meal for over 100 people.

“In particular we want to help and feed the vulnerable people who can’t afford to feed their families, elderly people who are isolated, really just anyone who is alone on Christmas day.

“We’ve been to organisations so they can offer referrals to those who need it, like the foodbank works, but we’re appealing to others who maybe don’t use those services to come forward.”

As well as providing a meal on the day, the group are hoping to make it a fun celebration.

Ms Peter said: “We’re planning on having a gift for each person registered to come along and make sure there’s fun and games.

“There will also be crackers on the table.

“I would just like to thank everyone for there generosity so far, and I’m really looking forward to working alongside these guys to help bring the people of Peterhead together.

“We want to link up the community and oppose the division that goes on, especially this festive season.

“Ideally we want to go on and become a registered charity with the aim of bringing people together but for now we’re just going where the need is and trying to help out.”
