A pensioner proved age is no barrier to success when he jumped into the north sea and won a swimming race last night.

Aberdeen 68-year-old Ian Milne last took part in, and won, the annual Bay Swim at Peterhead in 1983 when he was 32.

Last night he donned his trunks once again and rolled back the years as he beat every other entrant to the other side of the water.

Mr Milne said: “The last time I did this was 1983, and I won it then as well.”

The event, along with an accompanying raft race, was part of the Scottish Week celebrations in the Blue Toon and the night ended with a spectacular fireworks display.

Last year only four teams took part in the raft race but last night six battled it out for the title.

Crews from the Coastguards service, Asco, Stepping Stones Nursery, BrewToon and Fairy Tails Dog Grooming all took part but Team McGill won the contest in their red raft branded with the Ferarri logo.

The group have won the contest five times in the last seven years, and were cheered by the crowds as they reached the finish line.

The evening featured a space wheel show, a kung fu display, music and a flame display from Theatre Modo.

Peterhead’s Scottish Week has been held in the town every year since 1961 and attracts thousands of visitors each time.
