A busy open day at a north-east harbour is on course to raise thousands of pounds for a local seamen’s charity.

The old fish market at Peterhead was brought back to life on Saturday for the port’s annual fundraising drive.

Scores of families flocked to the quayside for the vast array of activities and entertainment lined up for the popular event, which is now in its 20th year.

Among the many highlights was a fish filleting contest compered by Duncan Lucas of industry support group Passionate About Fish, who holds the world record for filleting halibut. The competition, which was held for the first time, saw points awarded for technique, speed, hygiene and presentation.

Visitors were also given the chance to tour the nearby Scottish Maritime Academy, where they could try out their sea-legs on a £25,000 marine bridge simulator.

The fish market food hall proved a big hit throughout the day and visitors had the chance to explore more than 60 indoor trade and craft stalls, as well as check out model boat displays.

Outside, there were some spectacular steam engines on display, along with rickshaws, a bike roadshow and football and basketball. Visitors also got to meet members of the town’s RNLI team.

Entertainment came from, amongst others, the Lawrence Dance Academy and Ythan Fiddlers.

All proceeds from the event go to the port’s fishermen’s mission. A spokesman said the total amount raised on Saturday would be announced soon.
