A Peterhead charity’s plans for a garden makeover project have received a major boost thanks to a north-east property firm.

Inspire, which supports hundreds of adults, young people and children with learning disabilities, operates several services in the coastal town.

It is currently raising funds to modernise a garden at its Eden Drive base – a four bedroom home in Peterhead – and has been awarded £2,000 towards the cost of the scheme by Aberdeen-based housing advisers ASPC.

Last night, Mary Ritchie, a support worker at Eden Drive, said the money would be used to improve accessibility to the garden for the four long-term occupants of the house.

It will also create a planting area for residents.

“The back garden is such a lovely space, but there’s no ramp and there’s no privacy. There’s nothing – and they love outside,” she said.

“It’s a big project. It will let them plant things and create a social area. It will definitely improve things.”

Sian Simpson, who also works at Eden Drive, added: “Our hope is also to have a decking area and a patio for BBQs where people can socialise and to establish some raised flower beds that are accessible for people in wheelchairs to tend to.

“We are really keen to use the garden to its full potential. The people we support love being outside but at the moment the garden needs to have some serious new life injected into it.”

Donations towards the ambitious project have already topped £4,500.

Other backers include the Peterhead and district Round Table.

ASPC chairman John MacRae said he was delighted to be able to support the scheme.
