A body has been found following a month-long search for a missing Crimond Man.

Malcolm MacNeil, 42, had been reported missing from the area on February 28.

His body was recovered in an unoccupied building in Backgate area of Peterhead on Wednesday afternoon.

Last night, tributes were paid to the family and friends of Mr MacNeil by community leaders.

Peterhead councillor Anne Allan said: “It’s a sad ending for the family after the weeks they’ve had to wait not knowing what’s happened. I’m just very sorry that it’s been such a sad outcome.

“Everyone who knew him or was familiar with the case will be thinking of the family at this time.”

Councillor Stuart Pratt added: “Obviously, it will have been a worrying time for the family and I’m sure everyone who knew him will be thinking of them.”

A spokeswoman for the police said that Mr MacNeil, who was also known as Calum, had been found dead at 1.45pm on March 18.

He had last been seen by family members on Ravenscraig Road wearing a black woolen hat, tracksuit bottoms and trainer-style boots.

“The death is being treated as unexplained,” the police spokeswoman added.

Mr MacNeil, who was about 6ft 2ins, had short, greying hair and a distinctive dragon tattoo on his left arm.

A report on his death will now be filed with the Procurator Fiscal.

His family, who live in Crimond, declined to comment.
