Hero tried to save life of Peterhead taxi driver after his car plunged into harbour

A “hero” who tried to save the life of a north-east taxi driver when his car plunged into the water has been honoured by the first Minister.

Gavin Sutherland jumped into Peterhead Harbour last year when 42-year-old, Graeme Reid, careered into the sea just weeks after purchasing his black Kia Sonata car.

Mr Sutherland was tragically unsuccessful in saving Mr Reid’s life after his car filled with water and turned on its roof and sank.

Mr Sutherland, meanwhile, had to be treated for hypothermia.

At a ceremony in Edinburgh this month, the 34-year-old received a Brave@Heart award from First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

The offshore worker said he was “very proud” to be recognised, but was not sure how to feel about the accolade.

“It was a spur of the moment decision,” he said.

“I’m sure I would do it again if I had to, but touch wood that never happens.”

It was not the first time Mr Sutherland has tried to save a life – previously he dived selflessly into the same harbour to rescue a drowning man 16 years ago.

“I was working away one day and saw a JCB lose control and crash into the harbour,” he said.

“I managed to pull him out that day.”

The Brave@Heart awards recognise local heroes across Scotland.

At Edinburgh Castle, 45 people including firefighters and members of the public were awarded for their bravery by Ms Sturgeon.

She said: “In Scotland there is a real sense of community and we must never forget how privileged we are to have such dedicated emergency professionals and members of the public, willing to assist even when their own lives are in danger.

“Hearing first-hand accounts of the bravery demonstrated during these events really drives home the incredible strength of character and the selfless acts undertaken.

“It’s vital for us to cherish and encourage that concern for others and we should be so proud of those brave men, women and young people.”

She added the awards were an opportunity for Scotland to say “thank you” to its heroes.

“Their selflessness, compassion and courage is inspiring and are an example to us all,” she said.
