Dickensian twist as carolers visit north-east care homes

Buchanhaven Heritage Society in Peterhead donned some Charles Dickens-inspired garb to spread holiday joy around the town.

The festive season took a Dickensian twist as residents at several north-east care homes were treated to a visit by costumed carollers.

For the second year in a row, volunteers from Buchanhaven Heritage Society in Peterhead donned some Charles Dickens-inspired garb to spread holiday joy around the town.

The choir visited Grangepark Care Home, Wyndwell Care Home and Peterhead Community Hospital to perform a medley of carols.

Last night society chairman Alex Geddes said: “It went extremely well. It’s been an exceptional week for the choir. It’s the second year we’ve done it.

“Last year, I put a wee bit on Facebook asking if people wanted to form a Dickensian choir, thinking we might get two or three interested people.

“But we were swamped, and it went so well that the team decided to get back together this year.”

Mr Geddes said the events are reliant on the “goodwill” of the carollers, who donate their time and pay to hire the costumes themselves. The visits were followed up by a joint carol service with the Salvation Army on Saturday night.

Mr Geddes added: “It gets everybody into the Christmas spirit. I think it will become an annual event for us now.”

The heritage society is based at a 19th-century schoolhouse and was founded to safeguard the history and heritage of the fishing community of Buchanhaven, which is a now a neighbourhood of Peterhead.

The refurbishment of the heritage centre – funded by a grant from the Sita Foundation – is likely to begin in February and Mr Geddes said the society are looking forward to enjoying a fantastic 2016.
