A north-east special school has opened a new playground which is accessible for all the pupils to enjoy.
The unveiling of the new mobility inclusive play equipment at Anna Ritchie School in Peterhead is the culmination of years of fundraising efforts from teachers and the parent council.
The park, at the school’s Grange Garden campus in Peterhead, includes a roundabout and basket swing accessible to youngsters who use a wheelchair.
Last night acting head teacher Sharon Ferguson said she and her team are “absolutely delighted” that the project is a success.
“The pupils have really enjoyed playing with it all and the accessibility for more pupils is so important especially the wheelchair swing.
“The roundabout and basket swing also encourage our youngsters to play together developing their social skills,” she said.
Fellow teacher Catriona Creighton said that it was “lovely” to welcome back former head teacher Ishbel Cruickshank who launched the initiative five years ago.
She added: “The support Anna Ritchie receives from the local community has always been amazing and is invaluable in helping us to continually improve the experience for our pupils.”
And parent council treasurer Marna McDonald thanked supermarket giant Tesco for offering a grant donation through its
Awards for All programme.
The team at Anna Ritchie School are now working on funding more mobile technology for the pupils and building a school library.
