Multimillion-pound plans have been tabled to build a pub and 70-bed hotel at the entrance to the north-east’s largest town.

The proposals are the first phase of the ambitious Buchan Gateway development at the Invernettie roundabout, south of Peterhead.

In the end, the site will be home shops, restaurants, a supermarket and a petrol station as well as the newly submitted plans for the pub and restaurant.

The land earmarked for this first phase lies between the existing McDonalds and B&Q superstore.

In a statement to local planners, a spokesman for pub and restaurant firm Marston’s Inns and Taverns, who will operate the venue, said: “Marston’s is a recognised market leader as being best in class in the field of new licensed premises development.

“Each investment proposal constitutes in the region of £2.5million to £3million capital investment.”

Marston’s already employees 13,000 people across 1,700 pubs and restaurants in the UK. It is estimated that the new Peterhead outlet will create between 40-45 jobs for the local area.

The spokesman added: “The majority of post-holders are drawn from the immediate local area. Marston’s prides itself on offering good quality jobs and career progression.”

The pub plans include second-floor space for landlord living accommodation and the site will have more than 100 parking spaces.

The neighbouring hotel will be spread over three floors and will contain a dining space and beds for 70 guests.

North-east councillors granted planning permission in principle for the whole scheme in August, although concerns were raised about major retail parks overshadowing the town centre shopping trade in Peterhead.

The Buchan Gateway will feature two warehouses measuring 40,000sq ft and 50,000sq ft for food and retail units. B&Q and McDonalds are existing tenants at the site, off the A90 Peterhead to

Aberdeen road, and will become part of a larger vision to hook shoppers at the town’s entrance.
