A new street in the north-east’s biggest town has been named after a late shopkeeper and councillor who “greatly contributed” to the local community.
Newell Lane in the £7.6million housing development on the site of the former Craigewan Nursing Home has been named in honour of Elsie Newell and her husband Raymond.
The move comes after a campaign by local history group the Buchanhaven Heritage Society who petitioned the council to recognise the pair.
Aberdeenshire Council planners revealed the society said that the Newells were “prominent local people who contributed greatly to the community and they therefore believe that their service to Peterhead is worthy of recognition”.
Mrs Newell served as a local councillor in the 1960s and current local representative Stephen Smith told planners the contribution of females elected officials should be honoured.
Addressing the planners, Mr Smith said: “It’s important therefore that we remember those pioneers who led the way for women in public life, and who did things that would have been considered radical in their day.”
The new street is at the heart of the multimillion-pound Craigewan housing scheme on the site of a former care home in the north of the town.
The 62-home estate – which includes a number for tenants with learning difficulties – is on the edge of Ugie Road and Newell Lane can be accessed from Sutherland Avenue and King Street.
The Scottish Government, council and Sanctuary Housing all contributed to the plans.
