The family of a north-east grandmother who suffered horrific injuries in a fall at a care home have decided to move her elsewhere.

Shocking images of Jill Symmonds emerged last week, after she fell while left unattended – despite having had a fit that day – at Sunnybank Care Home in Cruden Bay.

The 78-year-old was taken to hospital to for treatment, staff did not tell her family – who only found out nine hours later when they called to check in.

Meallmore Ltd, which runs the home, has since apologised and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Yesterday, Mrs Symmonds’s furious relatives met with bosses at the care home but said they had “lost trust” in the facility.

Granddaughter Emma Symmonds, from Stuartfield, said: “For us, actions speak louder than words, and none of us are sleeping any easier with her being in there.

“We hoped that we’d come out of that meeting feeling better.

“We were given reassurances that this wouldn’t happen again, but once you lose trust in the staff, it’s difficult to get it back. We had to decide whether we could get that back, or if it was better to get out of there and start fresh.”

A spokeswoman for Meallmore said it takes fall prevention “very seriously”.

“However, it is important to note we do not restrict movement or choice of people in our care,” she added.

“As a company, we take matters like this extremely seriously, as the care, comfort and security of our residents is always our top priority.”
