Over the course of his career in Scottish football, Tom “Jaws” Forsyth made 326 appearances for Rangers, won 22 Scotland caps and played at the 1978 World Cup.
Mr Forsyth has died at the age of 71.
He joined Rangers in 1972 after five years at Motherwell, and the highlight of his first season at Ibrox was scoring the winner against Celtic at 1973’s Scottish Cup Final.
During his 10 years with Rangers he won three league titles, four Scottish Cups and two League Cups.
He also represented his country and played for Scotland on 22 occasions.
Mr Forsyth captained Scotland against Switzerland in 1976.
When he retired from playing professionally, Mr Forsyth went on to manage Dunfermline in 1982, although he stepped down within a year.
He then went on to work together with Rangers teammate Tommy McLean as Greenock Morton’s assistant manager the following year.
The pair led Motherwell and then Hearts in 1984 and 1994 respectively.
Following his death on August 14 at home with his family by his side, the Scottish football community united paid tribute to his memory and remembered his impact on the sport.
A statement from Rangers posted on the club’s website said: “Everyone at Rangers Football Club is sad to learn of the news that our former player Tom Forsyth has passed away this evening.
“We pass on our heartfelt condolences to the entire family circle at this difficult time.”
Derek Johnstone, fellow Rangers player, told the Glasgow Times: “Heroes come and go but legends live forever, and Tam Forsyth is a legend.
“I am so sorry to learn of his passing and my thoughts and condolences are with his friends and family.
“He played every game as if it were a cup final, whether it was Brechin or Barcelona.”
In a post on social media, Motherwell FC said: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the death of former Motherwell player and assistant manager Tam Forsyth.”
Greenock Morton FC also paid tribute on social media, posting: “We are saddened to hear of the death of former assistant manager Tom Forsyth.
“Our thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends at this sad time.”
