Alistair Carmichael threatened by ‘cybernats’ in aggressive posts

A petition was lodged at the Court of Session by four of MP Alistair Carmichael's constituents in a bid to oust him

Former Scottish secretary Alistair Carmichael says he fears for the safety of his staff after being threatened in a string of menacing online messages.

The northern isles MP was branded a “poor excuse for a human” and jokes were made about burning down his constituency office.

One man said he would struggle to restrain himself from assaulting the former UK Government is he met him.

The vitriol was aimed at Scotland’s only Liberal Democrat MP in the week he faced a court challenge to his general election victory.

Four of his constituents have raised a petition accusing him of misleading voters in May over the leaked “Frenchgate memo”.

A friend of the politician has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover his legal costs.

Mr Carmichael said last night that he had no plans to report the online comments to the police – but he did express concern for his staff.

He said: “They are in the office all week when I’m not there, they are on their own.

“I just don’t think anybody should have to deal with this sort of quite blatant intimidation.

“This week, since the crowdfunding page was launched by my friend in Aberdeen, they have gone ballistic.”

It is not known whether ay of the people behind the posts are SNP members because their identities could not be confirmed.

The party investigated after being contacted by The Press and Journal, but a spokeswoman said that without addresses and dates of birth it was impossible to say whether or not they were members.

Earlier this year First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pledged to tackle so-called “cybernats” over online abuse.

She said it was unacceptable for people to use social media to “threaten violence, or hurl vile abuse, or seek to silence the voice of others through intimidation”.

She said that If SNP members “crossed the line” in their posts, the party would take action.

Ms Sturgeon was herself the victim of a barrage of criticism on Twitter this week after welcoming the Queen to Edinburgh.
