Aberdeen City Council by-election results: SNP win both seats

Voters in Aberdeen went to the polls yesterday to elect two new city councillors to represent them up to the general council elections in 2017.

The positions in the Midstocket and Rosemount ward and the George Street and Harbour area were recently made vacant by the resignations of independent councillor, Fraser Forsyth, and the SNP’s Andrew May.

The SNP’s Michael Hutchinson wons George St/Harbour with 961 votes of 1,898 votes cast.

The SNP’s Alex Nicoll won Midstocket/Rosemount with 1,168 votes of  2,872 votes cast.

George Street/Harbour – voter turnout was at 15.58%. (12,179/ votes cast – 1,898 ) .

Labour’s Mike Scott took 490 votes, Conservative’s Brian Davidson took 195 votes,  Greens Alex Jarvis took 136 votes and Liberal Democrat Euan Davidson took 96 votes.

Midstocket/Rosemount voter turnout was at 24.49% (11,825/ votes cast – 2,872 ).

Conservative’s Tom Mason took 677 votes, Labour’s Howard Gemmel took 605 votes, Liberal Democrat Ken McLeoad took 238 votes and Green’s Jennifer Phillip took 170 votes.

It is the second by-election for Aberdeen in recent months, after SNP councillors Kirsty Blackman and Callum McCaig were elected as MPs in the general election.

The SNP held onto both seats, with Neil Copland and Stephen Flynn elected.

Following today’s by-election, the political make-up at Aberdeen City Council currently stands at Labour (17), Conservatives (2), Independent Alliance (3), SNP (16), Liberal Democrat (5).
