Owen Smith has claimed Scotland will be at the “forefront of a new industrial revolution” if he wins the Labour leadership contest.
Mr Smith, who spoke in Edinburgh yesterday, said he would invest an extra £15billion in the Green Investment Bank – and “massively expand” its role north of the border.
The MP is challenging Mr Corbyn for leadership of the Labour party, but is languishing well behind the incumbent in most polls.
A recent survey suggested Mr Corbyn is on course to increase his mandate compared to his initial election last year.
Mr Smith, who is visiting Glasgow today, said: “Scotland’s expertise in renewable energy make it the obvious choice as home of the Green Investment Bank.
“But the Tories’ reckless privatisation plans risk watering down investment in green energy and jeopardising the jobs of the future.
“That’s why, if I’m Labour leader, I’ll fight the Tories’ privatisation of the Green Investment Bank and commit to massively expand its role in Scotland.
“With a British New Deal and £15bn investment in green energy, I’ll lead a Labour Government that’s ambitious for Scotland.
“And I’ll lead a new industrial revolution that Scotland will be at the forefront of.”
The winner of the Labour leadership will be announced at the party’s conference later this month.
