Ruth Davidson ‘feels like a right pillock’ after tweeting about spy chief’s Scottish home

Ruth Davidson has been forced to apologise to the head of MI6 after putting details of the whereabouts of his Scottish home on Twitter.

The former Scottish Tory leader posted a tweet that provided rough information about Sir Alex Younger’s residence north of the border.

The tweet, which she has taken down, was condemned as “extremely reckless” and an act of “brash negligence” by former SNP deputy leader Angus Robertson, who was a member of the Intelligence and Security Committee that oversees MI6.

Ms Davidson’s tweet came after it was announced Ken McCallum is the new head of domestic spy agency MI5.

This is extremely reckless and irresponsible behaviour by Ruth Davidson who has caused totally avoidable security concerns.”

Angus Robertson, ex-SNP deputy leader

An online conversation about Mr McCallum’s Scottish background turned to Sir Alex.  Ms Davidson remarked that he splits his time between London and Scotland. Her tweet also contained information about where he stays north of the border.

Angus Robertson said it was an “ill-considered act of brash negligence”.

Mr Robertson said: “This is extremely reckless and irresponsible behaviour by Ruth Davidson who has caused totally avoidable security concerns. It frankly beggars belief she thought this was a good thing to share on Twitter when personal security is important for our intelligence community. This is an ill-considered act of brash negligence”.

A spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives said: “Ruth thought she was sending the tweet as a private message, and as soon as she realised it was public took it down.

“She feels like a right pillock for this mistake, and wishes to apologise very sincerely to Mr Younger.”
