Jim Murphy pledges to abolish zero hour contracts

Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy said Labour would abolish zero hour contracts.
Scottish Labour leader Jim Murphy said Labour would abolish zero hour contracts.

Jim Murphy said Labour will stand up for working people not boardroom bosses as he pledged to ban zero hour contracts.

The Scottish party leader gave the undertaking outside of a Sports Direct store in Glasgow, as 90% of the firm’s staff are on zero hour contracts.

During Thursday night’s leaders debate, David Cameron said he “never minded” the controversial contacts that can leave employees not knowing how many hours they will work, if any, or be able to pay the bills.

Labour said its plan is that every worker will get guarantee hours are 12 weeks of working regular hours.

Mr Murphy said: “During the debate David Cameron said never mind zero hours contracts. Well I do mind, Scotland minds and a Labour Government will ban exploitative zero hours contracts.

“Time is running out for bad bosses who rip off workers on zero hours contracts. Under a Labour Government working people will be guaranteed regular hours after 12 weeks of work.

“Families across Scotland are budgeting week to week without knowing how much money will be coming through the door; it’s nothing short of a scandal. That is why a Labour Government will ban exploitative zero hours contracts.”

He added: “Under the Tories working people in Scotland have been let down. In May Scotland is going to tell the Tories their time is up, but only a Labour government is big enough and strong enough to kick them out. A vote for any party other than Labour simply gives David Cameron more time in Number 10.”
