Glamis Castle ready to welcome visitors to exciting new season

Glamis Castle, the ancestral home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and birthplace of HRH The Princess Margaret will reopen to the public Friday March 30.

Visitors this season will have the opportunity to enjoy the latest exhibition featuring artefacts, paintings and models showcasing Streatlam Castle, which was one of the three historical properties owned by the Earls of Strathmore.

On March 29 1959 the remains of Streatlam Castle vanished in a series of huge explosions. The home where John Bowes had been brought up, and where he had lived for much of his life, had effectively been obliterated by the Territorial Army upon invitation from the castle’s then owner. And yet not every trace had been erased. This exhibition will show how Streatlam looked in its heyday, bringing to life the style in which John Bowes, one of the richest men in England, lived. His were the classic passions of a Victorian gentleman, certainly, but one who was out of the ordinary in many ways, and this exhibition will tell that tale.
