Scots railway passengers had to be rescued from a train this morning after it got stuck in a freak flood.
Emergency services helped 30 people escape from carriages which became stranded in approximately five feet of water on Sunday night.
Train operators said the Glasgow Central to Carlisle service “came to a halt after striking a large volume of water” on the line.
Firefighters used ladders to create a three-meter bridge from a carriage, which allowed those on board to be led to safety by their officers and railway personnel.
Two people reported having sustained injuries in the incident, which happened around half-a-mile south of Mauchline, East Ayrshire.
They received precautionary check-ups from paramedics at the scene, while ScotRail said one person was treated “for a minor head injury”.
A spokeswoman for ScotRail said: “Last night’s Glasgow Central to Carlisle service came to a halt after striking a large volume of water between Kilmarnock and Auchinleck.
“The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) attended and all passengers were evacuated safely and as soon as possible.
“One passenger was treated on site for a minor head injury.
“We are currently working with Network Rail to move the train and re-open the line as soon as possible.”
A spokesman for the SFRS said: “Floodwater poses hidden dangers and people should avoid walking or driving through it.
“It may appear safe but you can’t see hazards beneath the surface or even potentially strong currents.
“Around six inches of water can be enough to knock an adult off their feet.
“Even when standing water has cleared the surfaces are of course likely to be slippery for some time, which means drivers are more likely to lose control and need greater distances to stop safely.
“We would urge people to stay aware of the conditions, exercise caution and obviously follow any advice from local authorities and the police.”
Across the country the environmental watchdog Sepa issued more than 30 flood warnings and a further 12 less serious flood alerts.
Firefighters said they attended 11 flood-related incidents in Ayrshire yesterday (Mon) where crews worked to rescue people and clear water from properties.
The flooding caused disruption throughout the day with replacement buses transporting passengers between Dumfries and Kilmarnock and stations in between.
Around 40 people had to be rescued from a supermarket in Kilmarnock after becoming stranded by rapidly rising flood waters.
