A petition with almost 600 signatures, calling for Aberdeenshire Council to oppose the dualling of the A96 Aberdeen to Inverness road, will be considered by councillors next week.
Transport Scotland is currently reviewing a number of options for dualling the 86 miles of the A96 between the two cities.
But a petition, urging Aberdeenshire Council to stand against the project in order to cut emissions, has now been signed by 598 people.
Those behind the campaign have argued that the Scottish Government’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% by the year 2030 “cannot be met if there is large-scale new road-building during the decade”, and that “traffic volumes on the A96 do not require a dual carriageway road”.
Transport Scotland has argued the project would improve journey time, create economic growth, and reduce the risk of accidents on the road.
The petition will be discussed at next week’s infrastructure committee.
