A man who caused a crash in Peterhead when driving while banned from the roads has been jailed.
Convicted drink driver Pavel Urkel also failed to provide a breath test at the scene of the incident in Kinmundy Road on Sunday, May 10.
At Aberdeen Sheriff Court yesterday, Sheriff Graham Buchanan said there was “no alternative” but to send the 36-year-old to prison after he admitted the latest charges.
Urkel has two previous convictions for drink driving, as well as for driving while disqualified.
Fiscal depute Lynzi Souter said the collision, at around 4.20pm, had occurred as Urkel’s Toyota Avensis was in the opposing lane.
No translator was present at the crash scene, but Mrs Souter said he had understood when he had been asked for breath sample and “had several opportunities to provide a specimen”.
He was taken to hospital afterwards for neck and back pain.
Defence solicitor Stuart Flowerdew said Urkel had changed in the years since his past offences – and was only trying to stop his girlfriend from drink driving herself at the time.
Mr Flowerdew said: “I think in some way he was trying to protect her from committing the offence he had previously.
“It was three years ago and I would submit lessons have been learned and he has moved his life forward.”
Unswayed by protests that Urkel, of Mowatshill Road in Peterhead, was currently working two jobs and that his partner was pregnant, Sheriff Buchanan jailed him for four months and disqualified him from holding a licence for four years and two months.
