Dramatic pictures show tonnes of earth blocking Highland road after landslip

BEAR Scotland have released dramatic pictures showing some of the estimated more than 2,000 tonnes of material which came down the hillside adjacent to the A83 on Tuesday.

The Tarbet to Campbeltown Road was blocked at the Rest and Be Thankful following the landslide, and teams have been using specialist excavators to clear the damage.

Up to 10in of rain fell across parts of Scotland in just three days, resulting in landslips across the country.

Estimates suggest around 1,000 tonnes of debris came down the slope at the Rest and Be Thankful, and a further 1,200 tonnes was caught be the debris fencing on the hillside.

The Old Military Road, seen in the background of the below picture, was opened as a diversion around 3pm on Tuesday.

The A83 is expected to reopen this evening before peak traffic, under temporary traffic signage control.
