Aberdeen could finally get snow this weekend

Ok, there isn't enough snow to go sledging quite yet!
Ok, there isn't enough snow to go sledging quite yet!

Aberdeen could finally get some snow this weekend as wintry weather makes its way into the north-east and Moray.

Forecasters said a cold air mass moving into Scotland from the north will bring snow to Speyside, Aberdeenshire and possibly the granite city today and tomorrow.

Motorists throughout the region are once again being urged to exercise caution on the roads with two Met Office warnings for snow and ice in place.

A yellow “be aware” warning is in place until noon today in western Aberdeenshire and Moray, and another for the whole of the north-east and Moray is effective from 4pm today until 10am tomorrow.

Several roads which had been closed for days by drifting snow and ice reopened yesterday.

The A93 Braemar to Blairgowrie road was back in use by 10am yesterday – just in time for snowboarders and skiers to take advantage of prime sporting conditions.

The B974 Banchory to Fettercairn road also reopened, as did the A939 Ballater to Tomintoul, however the B976 Crathie to Gairnshiel road remained closed due to the wintry conditions.

About 4in of snow was expected in Moray and western Aberdeenshire this morning, with localised snowfalls of up to two-and-a-half inches in lower regions.

Up to an inch of snow could land in Aberdeen and other regions of Aberdeenshire which have so far been relatively untouched, while inland areas could experience as much as 2in.

Met Office forecaster, Mark Wilson, said: “Parts of the Aberdeenshire coast are most vulnerable to snow coming down from the north this time, but all areas could see snow.

“The further north you get, the greater the chance, but there’s a cold air mass coming down and there’s still a chance of snow in Aberdeen as well.

“Where there’s any precipitation there’s a high risk of ice on Saturday and Sunday night. In Aberdeen it will be about -2C to -3C this weekend but the rest of Sunday will be a much better day with sunny spells.”

Areas of Moray could experience temperatures as low as -10C this weekend, he added, with -8C predicted for Braemar.

A spokesman for Network Rail said all services were expected to run as normal.
