Latest tool in fight against reckless driving comes into force in Aberdeenshire

Police in Aberdeenshire have vowed not to relent in their crackdown on reckless driving as their latest tool in the fight for safer roads comes into force.

A new mobile speed sign – funded by the Garioch Community Safety Partnership – is now in place at on the B977 at Kintore.

Last night, Inspector Jon Millar, of the Garioch community policing team, said the equipment had proved successful across the area with police patrols to reinforce clear speed limit.

The electronic sign instructs drivers to slow down and obey the 30mph limit on the road.

The officer said the sign – which can be deployed within any community in the Garioch area – would be a vital tool in police road safety initiative, Operation Cedar.

He added it should help “improve driving behaviour and encourage safe and sensible driving” in Aberdeenshire.

Ins Millar said: “We can mobilise it within the area and we can move it to places were we have had complaints for speeding.

“It will flash up and tell you to slow down. It is an education tool to remind you of the speed limit. What we will try and do is deploy officers on the ground on high-vis patrols to back up the work the sign brings.

“We’ll certainly look for people speeding as and where we deploy this. This piece of kit is one tool we can use to help educate drivers on their behaviour.

“There is a similar piece of equipment operating just now in the Formartine area and there will be one road out in the Marr area in the near future.

“We have no fixed time on it and will move it to where we need. We can deploy it where we think there is an issue.”

Councillor Ron McKail, chairman of the Garioch and North Marr Community Safety Group, said: “The combined effect of the sign and enforcement from Police Scotland has the potential to make a real difference to driver behaviour, and is another step towards improved road safety in our towns and villages.”
