The grieving family of a father-of-one who died after being beaten up in a pub brawl eight years ago have appealed for help in identifying his attackers.
David Weaver had been at a family event along with 200 other people on November 22 2008, before being found outside in the street with serious head injuries.
He never regained consciousness and died in hospital months later, aged 45.
His daughter Toni said: “We all need justice for my dad and, for the six months he suffered, my heart was breaking, seeing him every day, knowing he would never be the same, and he never was, because he never survived.”
Previously unseen footage recorded shortly before violence erupted at the Hare and Hounds in Erdington, Birmingham, has now been released showing Mr Weaver mingling with people inside the pub.
West Midlands Police detectives issued the video on the anniversary of the attack following a cold case review.
Detective Superintendent Nick Walton, who helped lead the original inquiry, said there were people who knew who was involved in the fatal attack, but the first investigation had faced “great reluctance” from witnesses to come forward.
He said: “When you think, on the night in question, there were anywhere in the region of 200 people, all of whom know each other in some guise, all of whom were involved in a disorder in some guise, all of whom to a degree were involved in a disorder – yet no-one has come forward and told us what happened.
“We knew from some of the original media appeals that people within the community knew who was responsible for these offences but didn’t have the confidence to come forward.”
Detectives are now hoping that, with the passage of time, potential witnesses may have a change of heart.
Mr Walton said: “People have moved on in their lives and maybe there was something they were not able to reveal back then, but might be able to tell us now.
“They can speak to us in confidence and there are measures in place that we can adopt to protect people’s identity.”
Mr Weaver’s mother died two years ago without seeing her son’s killer bought to justice.
But his four sisters and brother have joined the police appeal in seeking answers.
Carol Weaver said: “Someone knows who did this to my brother and I am asking them to search their conscience and do the right thing and come forward.”
She added: “He was our rock in times of need and we miss him beyond words.”
