A Thai tourist body has confirmed no British nationals were among the casualties in today’s bomb attack in Bangkok.
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has released a statement after the attack at around 7pm local time.
The explosion happened outside a popular Hindu Erawan shrine for tourists at the Ratchaprasong intersection in central Bangkok. It was reported that 27 people were killed and 80 injured.
In a statement TAT said: “The motivation behind the explosion is not yet known. The affected area has been secured and security in central Bangkok has been increased.
“The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) advises tourists who are currently staying in the city to avoid the area this evening.
“TAT has not yet received confirmed reports of the number or nationality of casualties but there are no British or Irish nationals thought to be affected.
“All transport links in central Bangkok are running as usual but while the intersection is investigated there may be disruption to traffic.
“Hotels and shopping malls in the surrounding area will be open as normal from tomorrow (August 18). All other tourist attractions and services are open and operating as usual.
“TAT advises tourists to remain vigilant whilst travelling through busy parts of the city and if they see anything suspicious to report it to a nearby police or security officer. Tourists should follow local news and travel advice as they travel around the city.”
