Amazingly, driver Don Lee, 66, of San Jose, emerged with just a scratch on his right arm after the beam fell off a flatbed lorry, pierced the windscreen and lodged itself in the driver’s seat of his BMW.
Both vehicles were travelling at 60mph when the terrifying incident happened on the I-280 freeway in San Jose at about noon.
Javier Zambrano, 22, of Los Banos, who was driving the lorry, will be prosecuted once the investigation is complete, California Highway Patrol spokesman Ross Lee said.
