Aberdeen is far more than the sum of its parts…
Across the Granite City there are different communities, areas and suburbs which all add to the rich life and spirit of the place we call home.
From Garthdee to Dyce, Torry to Bucksburn, whether they are ancient or modern, they are all rich in memories for those who live, work and play here.
Here’s a snapshot from our archives of some suburbs of Aberdeen over the years.
Garthdee
Back in 1987, these teenagers were welcoming plans to build a £280,000 community centre at Garthdee. The lads – Alistair Knox, Mike Cummings, Dennis Robb, Willie Cowe, Stuart Robins, Gary Park, Steve Wilson and David Crudden – were keen on the coffee bar and social area coming their way after years of little to do in the area.
Kincorth
Schools are at the heart of any community… so here’s how Kirkhill Primary School looked back in 1957, with pupils enjoying a break outside.
Dyce
Horsepower was the order of the day in Dyce in 1971. John Taylor, of Silver Birch Stables, harnessed hard-working Bobby and Tony to deliver firewood in Victoria Street.
Broomhill
The summer of 1990 was a scorcher – so it was only right these three roadworkers took a break on Broomhill Road. Stopping for a breather were Michael Rae, Peter McKay and Brian McKenzie, all of Northern Construction Services.
Kaimhill
Street dance is nothing new… as these kids prove back in 1993. Michael Adam gives Martyn Horne a not-so-high five, while Steven Noble breakdances on the ground during a Kaimhill summer playscheme.
Tillydrone
Tillydrone in 1969, as a local woman makes her way home from the then state-of-the-art shopping centre which served the community.
Mannofield
Clearly a scarcity of cars on Great Western Road in 1966 – bar the Post Office van collecting from the pillar box.
Ferryhill
Lollipop woman Mrs Isobel Giles gives some pupils tips on road safety as she takes up duty outside Ferryhill Primary School in 1977. Isobel was the first lady to take up the post at the crossing.
Airyhall
Airyhall Playgroup recruited Dons star Alex McLeish to kick off the petition to save the under-threat group, in 1988.
Sheddocksley
Sheddocksley postman Mike Watson sets off with a full load of mail, ready to pick up another full bag half-way through his round in an effort to clear the backlog caused by a strike in 1986.
