It is frightening to think the millennium babies all come of age this year, but are they more advanced or better off than those of us that came of age in the 80s?
I mean, we had Opal Fruits and Pacers, none of this new-fangled Star Bursts, not to mention full size Wagon Wheels!
As far as technology goes, they could say they are better off, but are they, living with the constant threat and fear of a cyber-attack and being hacked.
In the 80s Dr Who and his loyal companion K9 would have sorted this out singlehanded, a bit like me and loyal guide dog Rumba and a hacker had several different meanings, from someone who tackled roughly at football to a scruffy dresser.
I’d say that with all the medical advances resulting in an older population and increased life expectancy, the question is, will we have a good quality of life in our later years and will there be an app to guide us through the ageing process?
Also, I’m not sure younger generations have the characters nor leaders to guide them, as they have many outside influencers, who suppress them, not to mention the pc police.
As a part-time comedian I strongly believe in freedom of speech, but again there are many trying to end this. I remember when I first had to attend ARI for an eye operation, the ward sister ruling with an iron fist, which would no doubt be seen as workplace bullying today, but everyone knew their role and duties.
Heaven knows how the millennials will cope in the big world, as without Wi-Fi and a phone charger many appear lost! This is a generalisation I know and I must commend some of our local young people and in particular I have to mention the Aberdeen Students RAG Campaign.
This year’s fantastic show Fitty Fitty Bang Bang was hilarious and had its usual clever take on the Doric tongue, and as someone who is proud of the dialect, it is great to sit back and listen to its rich descriptive qualities.
At the same time, the show makes lots of money for worthy north-east causes, which just shows that, apart from their phones and Wi-Fi addiction, they are a community spirited group, so there is most definitely hope for the future!
