Kezia Dugdale has demanded a U-turn on major Tory policies expected in today’s Queen’s Speech.
The Scottish Labour leader has challenged the PM to abandon austerity and provide greater support for the North Sea oil and gas industry.
Ms Dugdale argued the Tories’ failure to win a parliamentary majority meant they had no mandate to implement their pro-austerity manifesto.
She said: “Since the Tories first took power in 2010, Scotland has been ravaged by seven years of austerity and devastating cuts to social security.
“This has caused untold misery and penalised the poorest and most vulnerable, in particular the sick and disabled.
“Labour created the welfare state to provide protection for all from cradle to grave – the Tories’ systematic attempt to dismantle that legacy is economically nonsensical and morally unacceptable. It must be stopped – and now.
“Austerity hurts everybody. Scotland’s day-to-day budget – which pays for our teachers, nurses and police officers – is due to fall by a further £1 billion by 2019-20, bringing the total cuts to current expenditure since the Tories took office in 2010 to £2 billion.
“On June 8, the electorate delivered a stinging rebuke to Theresa May. It is time she listened.”
